Supervising Deputy Public Defender Kellie Byward and Deputy Public Defender Maggie Eisenberg traveled to Philadelphia, PA to give a presentation at the NLADAs Community-Oriented Defender Network Conference (June 2018).

Ms. Byward and Ms. Eisenberg trained public defenders across the nation on “Creative and Holistic Strategies for Defender Offices – Keeping up with Major Changes in the Law.”  They shared their experiences creating a Youth Offender Parole Unit in the San Bernardino County Public Defender’s Office, and encouraged others to share their own experience in tackling new opportunities for holistic defense to improve outcomes for our young clients.  Ms. Byward and Ms. Eisenberg also participated in a working group meeting with NFL players Malcolm Jenkins, Chris Long, and Rodney McLeod to share information about bail reform, and to establish concrete steps for defender led reform across the United States. NFL Philadelphia Eagles Safety, Malcolm Jenkins is the co-founder of the Players Coalition, a prominent group of football players dedicated to social and racial justice, particularly through criminal justice reforms.
