Our Mobile Defense Program visited the Joshua Tree Community Resource Fair on Wednesday, May 14, helping more than 100 individuals access free legal services in the Morongo Basin.
The Mobile Defense Program expands access to justice in underserved areas of the county by offering free legal assistance and virtual court services. Attendees received help with record clearing, resolving bench warrants, modifying misdemeanor summary probation, re-enrolling in court-ordered programs, and addressing outstanding fines. In partnership with the San Bernardino Superior Court, the event also offered on-site support for family law, child support, guardianship, landlord-tenant disputes, and small claims matters.
The monthly resource fair, hosted at the Joshua Tree Community Center, is a collaboration between San Bernardino County Special Districts and the Morongo Unified School District. It is held every second Wednesday of the month and brings together local and county agencies to serve families in remote communities.
“We work with many families who are displaced out here,” said Wayne Hamilton, community outreach coordinator for Morongo Unified School District. “Once a month, we hold Community Resource Day to connect them with support services and let them know what’s available. This month, we were glad to have the Public Defender’s Office assist with expungements and help clarify legal issues. Cleaning up their records gives them a better chance at improving their lives.”
Our department continues its mission to provide equitable access to legal services throughout San Bernardino County, particularly in communities with limited access to the court system.
